Impulse testing from minus to plus

Poppe + Potthoff Maschinenbau presents a unique rig for testing innovative com-ponents under varying pressure and temperature conditions

Nordhausen (Germany), July 13, 2015 - New materials allow for improving the functions, weight or cost of a component. However, rigid tests need to be performed before a newly designed product can finally go into serial manufacture. Novel air intakes made of special plastic, for example, need to withstand quick and extreme changes in temperature while performing steadily under pulsating positive and negative pressure.

Poppe + Potthoff Maschinenbau now enables test engineers to move thermal- and pressure-cycling tests from the road to the lab. The new test stand PPM 278-00 simulates even the most extreme real-world conditions, be it in the Arctic or the Sahara. A spacious climate chamber enables the parts on test to be exposed to temperatures from -72°C to +180°C (-97.6°F to 356°F) and humidity up to 98%.

The pressure adjustment ranges from -0.8 to +3.5 bar at a test frequency of 0.5 Hz and a test volume of 15 dm³. This allows for variable pressure pulsation tests to be performed in the overpressure-overpressure, overpressure-vacuum and vacuum-vacuum range. Three test connections are located on each side in the test chamber that can be individually shut off via separate valves. An automated tightness test can detect leaks in any individual test piece every X cycles and exclude it from the test circuit.

Poppe + Potthoff Maschinenbau introduced this unique pressure pulsation test stand at the Automotive Testing Expo Europe and is looking to expand in international markets, too. This year, the German expert for high pressure technology will also be attending the Automotive Testing Expos in China (booth 7027) and the USA (booth 5052). Its customized machines are designed for precision and high-performance and are used in research, development and production.
